The Time of the Wolf
Trekking on the trail of wolves with wildlife observation
Friday 21 February 2025Winter is a survival challenge for deer. The scarcity of food and the cold have forced them to develop some strategies: their digestive system and rumen become smaller, thus reducing their metabolism, they slow down their heart rate and lower their body temperature and, since winter torpor reduces their ability to escape, they gather in large herds to defend themselves from predators.
In winter, on the south-facing mountain slopes, where the timid warmth of the sun still manages to melt some snow and ice, it is not difficult to spot large herds of females or groups of males. Without causing any disturbance, which would require them to waste energy that is difficult to recover, we will walk in suitable places to attempt to spot them.
